Construction of concrete floating docks for the French Navy

French Navy Construction of concrete floating docks
French Navy Construction of concrete floating docks

The project consists in designing, building and maintaining two 160m-long floating docks for the new multi-mission frigates of the French Navy (FREMM).

Project

  • Client: Service d'Infrastructure de la Défense de Brest (Brest Defence Infrastructure Department)
  • Prime Contractor: Artelia
  • Duration of works: 20 months per major civil engineering structure
  • Amount: €26,000,000 excluding tax

Distinctive features and constraints

  • Design of the 1st structure in-house
  • Towing and transporting 10,000 tons per structure
  • Double deck bridge incorporating all fluids
  • Integrating sediment into the pier head ballast
  • Grading and removing pyrotechnic machinery

The Charier consortium was awarded the project based on a very innovative design that focused on finding optimal functionality for vessel refuelling operations.

The structure consists of a reinforced concrete floating dock with a double deck:
the first deck houses all the dry and wet service networks, while the totally unobstructed second deck provides access to vehicles and transhipment of suppliers.

Our project also included

  • Dredging, pyrotechnic clean-up and recovery of dredged sediment in situ
  • The reinforcement of the quay and installation of an approach ramp

Main quantities

Construction of the drydock, installed by flotation and towing, mooring to quay and pier head.

Floating dock dimensions:
  • 160 m long
  • 17 m wide
  • 8 m high
  • 3,250 m3 of reinforced concrete
  • Construction of the drydock pier head, installed by flotation and towing, mooring to quay and mooring pier head.

Pier head dimensions
  • 14 m in diameter
  • 21 m high
  • 530 m3 of reinforced concrete

Floating dock approach ramp
  • 35 m long
  • 5 m wide
  • 100 tons of steel

Reinforcement of the quay by ground anchors 30 lm each

Dredging the sinking basin for docking
  • 6,500 m3 of sediment dredged
  • Grade and remove pyrotechnic elements
  • Treat sediments using hydro-cycloning and adding hydraulic binder
  • Containment and recovery of polluted sediments in pier head ballast material
